Designer's Daruma is an art object which will fit right into modern aesthetic and gives it a touch of Japanese charm. Each Darma has a text written in Japanese on the right side: "コロブ x 7" and" おきる x 8" on the left. It means "Nana korobi, ya Oki" (literally: seven falls, eight getting up), a famous Buddhist reminder that you get up again no matter how many times you get knocked down. The six lines on Daruma's face show that time passes from the past to the future.  Nowadays, Daruma is still one most popular lucky talisman in Japan. First Daruma was made in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture (motherland of Imai Daruma NAYA company) in the 17th century by Japanese farmers. But Daruma's (Dharma) roots are much older. It goes back to the monk named Bodhidharma, who established Zen Buddhism in Japan about 1500 years ago. Usually, the old-school Daruma is made in red and represents the rounded silhouette of monk Bodhidharma sitting in the Zazen position in deep meditation.
